We have to bring this thread here too! It was one of my favourite places to get opinions on new shows to watch. Recently I finished watching quite a few shows. This is Us, Season 2. I hate to love that show. It's a little too much drama for me, but at the same time I'm sucked into the stories of the characters now.
Girl Boss: Quirky. There were a couple episodes that almost caused me to abandon ship, but I kept watching. Glow: I finished both seasons. LOVE this show. Female wrestlers in the 80s. highly recommend. Good Girls: That was fun.
Maniac: What a weird show! Anyone else watch this? It's about two people who end up in a psych experiment together.
Heartland Season 11: Another Canadian show. This one is my guilty pleasure. It's just a feel good show.
Atypical Season 2: Just as good as season 1. I hope they keep this show going.
I started watching:
Life in Pieces. I really like this one! Cute family humor.
Season 3 of Schitt's Creek is on Netflix now. I love this show! Canadian and funny. Thumbs up.
My husband and I recently tried out an episode of Quantico. I don't think he's sold. He doesn't like network TV shows. I didn't mind it though. Just enough action and "who done it?" for me.
Bosch. Sometimes it's a bit long and a bit dry, but overall it's good. We are 3 or 4 episodes in.
We seem to have completely abandoned Shameless, The Crown, Sneaky Pete, The Man in the High Castle, Riverdale, The Last Man on Earth, The 100, The Rain, and Money Heist. I also abandoned ship on Dynasty. It was awful.
Anyone else watching Survivor? It's a great season called David vs Goliath. There are some really great personalities. I'm hoping Jane the Virgin comes back soon. I loved that show.
We finished The Gentlemen and went back to where we left off on the most recent True Detective with Jodie Foster. But dh really isn't into it so I may finish that one myself. I mentioned The Killing and he put it in our queue so I think we'll start that one next.
My go to when I need a little dose of Friends is to watch the YouTube clip of Monica and Ross doing The Routine. So funny. My other favorite clip is when all the friends (except Ross) know about Monica and Chandler and Phoebe is pretend trying to seduce Chandler.
I'll have to mention The Gentleman to my husband. I'm not a big fan of Guy Ritchie's style (if it's what I'm thinking of) but I know he is.
The last season of The Morning Show wasn't my favorite but it did pick up as it went along.
I feel like you can't ever go wrong with Friends! I have the DVD set but they have all of the episodes on HBO Max. It really is good to get in that daily dose of laughter.
I mentioned this on Sarah's journal already (as I rambled on after saying I wasn't going to say much 🤦♀️) but we finished The Killing, which I thought was excellent. Quite tense, but very good. We're almost done with Hanna, which has the same 2 leading actors from The Killing (different roles though). My husband had already seen both shows but said they were so good he was willing to watch them again (and he couldn't remember most of what he'd seen since it was years ago). I told him last night that I needed Hanna to end soon because the amount of tension in each one was killing me. I frequently find myself throwing a blanket over my head because sometimes I just can't take it 😂
When my husband is working I watch a different show and I just started Harlan Coben's "Fool Me Once" on Netflix. I've read all of his books and we've seen his other Netflix shows and really enjoyed them. They always seem to feature the same actors/actresses, which is interesting, and they're all interesting mysteries with suspense and twists. I read this book but can't remember any of it so it'll be a fun surprise. I think I need to throw in a few Friends episodes because it's dawning on me that I'm watching so many shows with suspense and tension. I guess I'm a glutton for punishment in that aspect..ha ha! I find I'm reading books of the same genre.
I wrote about it in my journal but thought I'd also mention here that I'm really loving season 10 of Alone. DH and I are also watching The Gentlemen on Netflix. It's a Guy Ritchie show and if you don't like his style you won't like it. Actually I can't really say I'm a fan of Guy Ritchie but I am enjoying this show.
I never finished the last season of The Morning. show and there wasn't anything else I immediately wanted to watch on Apple so I let my subscription lapse. But I'll probably go back and finish it if I subscribe again.
I finally finished Friends and I'm missing my daily dose of belly laughs. To make it up I started watching PBS's All Creatures Great and Small. Not the same kind of laughs but still a nice dose of the feel goods.
I have no business starting a new show when I have so many that I'm still in the middle of. That said I just binged over half of season 1 of The Morning Show. It is sooo good! I'm totally hooked.
YES to LOL at Friends! I was just re-hashing the episode where Chandler starts taking bubble baths and somehow all of the friends end up in the bathroom while he's in the tub surrounded by bubbles. I know it may not be "kid friendly" but there are certain episodes I don't mind them watching (mostly my 13 year old). Chloe's favorite is still the one where Joey and Chandler leave "the baby on the bus." It is always my go-to on gloomy days and/or nights when I'm home by myself.
I told my husband about the newest season of True Detective and he was a) shocked he didn't know about it (which secretely made me gleeful) and b) excited to start watching. I can't handle more than one show at a time (unless I'm throwing on a Friends episode) and right now where halfway through the second season of The Killing.
I couldn't handle The Bear. Somehow I got through it, but I always felt so high-strung and stressed out when I watched. I do think the acting was incredible.
Over the last two days I have watched so many episodes of Young Sheldon that Netflix is asking if I’m still alive. It is genuinely funny. Great characters, great actors, 80s nostalgia, very enjoyable. 9-year old genius, Sheldon, goes to high school, and then at 11, college. So much social awkwardness and geekery. My favorite character is Annie Potts (from Ghostbusters) as Sheldon’s smoking, drinking Meemaw. I have somehow never seen an episode of The Big Bang Theory, but I may have to watch it now.
Sarah I can never get enough of Friends! I've watched the whole series at least twice and I always put on an episode if I'm by myself in the evening to have it on in the background. I'll occasionally play one if I'm at home walk/jogging on the treadmill, too. I always get a good laugh.
My husband and I watched the first 1-2 series of True Detective (at least the first one with Matthew McConaughey and that was great. I didn't realize they had another one with Jodie Foster.
I'm also wanting to see the Barbie movie but it hasn't happened yet. OJ Simpson sounds intriguing! Yet another I'll add to my list 😁
I watched the trailer for the Natalie Grace documentary and I'm intrigued! I'm still plowing my way through Friends. With 20+ episodes per season I'm only on season 6. They don't make em like that anymore.
I think the new True Detective with Jodie Foster started on MAX and I definitely want to watch that. I love her. I'm also a few episodes into the current season of Julia AND I started the season of American Crime Story - the one about OJ Simpson. I didn't think I"d be interested but listened to a podcast interview with Sterling K Brown which made me check it out. And then there's Barbie - still haven't seen it and it's on MAX now.
I've been meaning to visit this thread but gotten side tracked with my own journal!
We've been watching "The Killing" on Netflix and I am so heavily invested. It's not often I find myself wanting to binge watch episodes of a show, but this has me hooked. It's not new - maybe from 2011 and my husband already watched it several years ago - but we were looking for a new show to start after finishing The Morning Show (which I still love) and he mentioned The Killing. It's a great detective murdery mystery series if you're into that kind of thing. I thought they'd have everything wrapped up by the end of season 1 but we're 6 episodes into season 2 and there are so many new twists and turns. I love it! The guy detective (Holder) cracks me up. He's sort of sarcastic/obnoxious but really likeable. Given the fairly depressing story line it's nice to have him to balance out the mood.
A friend told me about the documentary "The Mysterious Case of Natalie Grace" or something like that. It's next on my list to watch. And maybe the Alabama frat/sorority documentary, but that's not too high on my list unless I think it'll provide me with ammo on all the reasons I can tell my kids not to join a sorority or a fraternity 😂
@Joyce I just did a whole post on the Blue Zones in my journal. By post I mean "novel" (that's my disclaimer 😁). I am definitely finding there is much more to longevity (not just living a longer life but living a longer, healthier life) than simply what/how you eat and exercise. There's something to be said about connection, community, laughter, purpose, and being outdoors. Ok maybe I invented that last one, but those people do seem to spend a lot of time outdoors.
I did forget to mention in my journal about the cowboy. Holy smokes he blew me away! I told my 13 year old that I don't know if I could haul my 42 year old butt up onto a horse and that 90+ year old man seemed to do it with ease. I loved watching the dancing, laughter, and overall enjoyment with each other.
I haven't heard of Spy Ops but I am intrigued. I love a good (conspiracy?) theory and find that stuff fascinating.
My husband told me about a new show on Netflix that seemed good. Something about Erin Brown? I can't remember the title.
I finished "Trying" on AppleTV and loved it.
I'm almost finished with Blue Zones, and I dig it. The areas featured have a holistic system, what we in the Veterans Health Administration would call "Whole Health". It isn't just the food we eat, the activity we do. It's also our social connections, a feeling of purpose and meaning, and a community where its members respect and care for one another. Pretty cool stuff!
I am almost finished with Spy Ops on Netflix. If anyone is into secret-squirrel spy stuff like me, you'll enjoy it. The first episode was "eh," but starts picking up steam with the Panama Invasion. Then the assassination attempt on Pope John Paul episode is simply bonkers. One of the proposed theories is that it was really a cardinal within the Vatican who ordered the hit. And that's the least crazy aspect of it.
ETA: Because of the writer's strike, I'm leaning into Korean dramas and just finished Juvenile Justice. That was so dark and overwrought, but I loved it. And I usually want to stick with fluffy and comedic tv shows, so it must have reeled me in.
I watched a docuseries on Netflix called “Living to 100 - Secrets of the Blue Zones.” I remember reading the book years ago and getting a lot out of it. So, it was nice to watch a documentary and actually see the people and places. I love that so many of them do no formal workouts and don’t diet or take supplements. It’s more like wellness is baked into their environment. They aren’t going to a gym, but the village is steep, or they walk everywhere, or they garden. So much of what these long-lived residents have in common is community, purpose, faith, and joy. They also eat a variety of traditional whole foods. I had several favorites, but I loved the 100-year old Costa Rican cowboy who is still saddling up his horse and working every day. I was also amazed by the Greek man who moved to the US, was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer at age 66 and given a few months to live. He went home to the Greek islands to die. After like 40 years of laughing, dancing, and drinking wine he was still vibrant and healthy.
Looking for some new shows to watch now that we are up to date on Winning Time. The Bear is definitely one I'll suggest to dh. I see ads for it and keep thinking we should revisit Only Murders in the Building. We only made it through a few episodes. Are we the only ones who didn't like it?
We're watching Winning Time on HBO. I'm not particularly a fan of basketball but it's a fun watch. They do that thing were they talk to the camera and we both almost gave up in the first 10 minutes, but it's not too bad and I'm glad we stuck with it. Also the sexism of the 70's and 80's is cringey and having lived through it as a teen and young adult I could do without. But we're still enjoying it. Snappy and keeps the attention.
We are maybe 4 episodes into The Bear, which I always want to call "the chef show" and it's pretty good so far. The first episode was a little bananas - I felt like I was having heart palpitations with the chaos in the kitchen and all the yelling but it definitely gets better. Like Skwigg said, it's a combination of food, a decent story line, and various character development.
I'm almost finished with season 1 of Firefly Lane...it's been pretty decent so far. I've heard season 2 is better so I'l keep going with it.
Your opinion of "And just like that" sounds like me with Ted Lasso. I loved season 1, season 2 was ok, and by season 3 I was glad I watched it but also glad it was over.
I've read so many good things about The Bear that I think I'll suggest that to dh as next on our "watch together" list. Right now we're watching the most recent season on Netflix of Alone (season 9). It's great because everyone actually seems to know what they're doing - have actual survival and hunting experience.
I watched the first episode of season 2 of And Just Like That and remembered why I didn't like season 1. Ugh I wish they had just left well enough alone. Someone let me know if I'm wrong and it gets better.
I have to laugh because every time Skwigg mentions a TV show my husband has literally just brought it up a day or 2 prior. He was telling me about The Bear and how I might like it because it has good character developement (he is a huge foodie so that's the biggest draw for him) and now I feel like I need to check it out. I am all about dysfunctional families (have I mentioned how much I loved both seasons of White Lotus?) LOL
I just started watching The Bear on Hulu. Wow! It’s intense and wonderful, like nothing I’ve ever seen. A talented chef moves home to take over the dysfunctional family burger joint. Lots of intense kitchen drama, good food, and crazy employees. I got Hulu just to watch it and I’m not regretting it at all. I can’t wait to watch more.
Just a little update here on shows my husband and I have enjoyed lately.
First of all: Taskmaster! It’s so ridiculous and fun. The UK version is the first and best…but we’ve also watched the NZ and Australian versions, and we love them, too! We love the show so much that we are now watching some of the Nordic versions with English subtitles. (You know I really love something if I’m willing to watch consistently with only subtitles. Haha!) I think I might have mentioned Taskmaster before, but I’m saying it again because it really is such a joy.
Ted Lasso was great, although my husband and I found this likely final, third season to be quite underwhelming. The first season was superb, the second season was really good…and the third season felt like the writers weren’t sure where they were going and lost their spark. It’s definitely still a show worth watching, though.
If you like period pieces, the latest series of All Creatures Great and Small is excellent. The characters make such a great ensemble crew.
It’s a movie (rather than TV), but have any of you seen the new Mario movie? It’s adorable and hilarious. Bowser is completely unhinged. LOL. There is one song in particular that you will never get out of your head, though! My nephews never stop singing it. I literally wake up with it in my head sometimes. Haha!
Two other movies that I highly recommend are Tetris and Air. They are both fascinating and entertaining at the same time. I’d love to hear if any of you have watched either of these. I learned so much in the Tetris movie that I never realized was happening at the time—and all due to a video game.
